FAQ
Why should I hire a birth photographer?
Birth is intense, and unpredictable. It can be a whirlwind for the birthing person and partner, and in the midst of everything it can be difficult to remember the details of birth. Birth photography allows me to capture time and help you remember and process the experience more fully. I will capture your partner's support, and the awe on your face as you meet your baby for the first time. Like your wedding day, the birth of your child is a day you will want to look back on forever. As a birth photographer, I am passionate about helping to capture those sweet moments and play a small role in your story.
Where are you based and do you travel?
I live in Holmen, WI and yes I love to travel! If you want me to photograph your birth story, it will require a travel fee, depending on where it takes place.
When will we get our photos?
I send 2-8 sneak peek photos via email within the first 48 hours. You will receive an online gallery link with all your photos within a maximum of 6 weeks (sometimes less depending on the season I photograph your story). You can download all the photos from the gallery and share them, choose your favorites, and order prints!
How many pictures will we receive?
Typically, clients receive 75-125 photos from the birth and initial postpartum period. If the birth is precipitous and there are very few photos, I offer complimentary Fresh 48 and/or newborn photos
Do you use flash?
At times, I will utilize use flash regardless of the time of day and amount of available light. This allows me to create images with the high contrast, rich coloring, and sharpness. I never point my flash directly at you (or anybody, for that matter) - I bounce it off of a nearby surface, usually a wall or the ceiling. That being said, if you find that it does bother you, please don't hesitate to speak up. My camera is well equipped to handle the challenging light in most circumstances and your comfort is my utmost priority. If it's too dark for my camera to achieve focus, I may have to add just enough light to alleviate the problem. I usually will turn on a small lamp, or a closet, hallway, or bathroom light for this.
What if you miss the birth?
I make every effort to arrive (or send a back up) with enough time to capture your labor, birth, and first hours together. In the event of a truly precipitous labor, I still aim to tell your story (in this case...your story was a fast, unpredictable birth!) I'll stay as long as we need to get the same amount of images you would have received if you had a longer labor. In the event that I missed the birth due to an error on my end I will offer a full refund.
When do you arrive?
I typically arrive when my clients are in active labor. When you have an active pattern of contractions that you cannot walk or talk through, this is a great time to call me in. That being said, I ALWAYS encourage my clients to notify me as a courtesy when they begin to have early labor signs. I trust my clients are know their intuition is best, and we will be communicating beforehand to determine appropriate timing.
Is there anywhere that doesn't allow birth photography?
I have attended births various capacities in the surrounding area, including hospitals, birth centers, and homebirths and I've never had an issue. I’ve even known many hospitals that welcome photographers into the OR for a c-section BUT it is ultimately up to the anesthesiologist who is on call the day of your birth. I suggest conversing with your provider about the facility you plan on birthing at, and recommend advocating for your birth photographer to have privileges in the OR in the event of a Caesarean.
How many births do you take each month?
I take 1-3 births each month at this point in time between photography and doula work.
Do you share every birth on social media?
I LOVE to share birth photography on social media, however, respecting the wishes of the client is my first and top priority. The client has full discretion over what type of birth images they are comfortable having shared. I have some clients who elect to share all photos with their name attached, some who share all photos with no name attached, and others who would like no photos of their birth shared. I respect each decision!
